Can an entrepreneur be groomed?
Can an entrepreneur be groomed? Professor Liu Ji, Executive Dean of China Europe International Business School, said they want to train the students in three quotients and four abilities. Besides the well known intelligence quotient (IQ) and emotion quotient (EQ) in the three quotients, Dean Liu also came up with this unique idea of “courage quotient”. He said, “courage quotient” is having courage and insight, as well as courage and resource for commercial struggle. That is: Dare to grab the opportunity, and make your move when it’s time to move. The 4 abilities refer to innovative ability, adaptability, public relations ability and the ability to build your own team.
Is China short of entrepreneurs or professional managers?
Dean Liu’s talk led to some hot debates among the guests. Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lenovo Group, Liu chuanzhi, obviously has his own unique view on this topic. He said, “What I require from the general workers at Lenovo or Shenzhou Digital is basically the sense of responsibility. Those at the middle management level must have the sense of responsibility and initiative, while those at the core management level must have the sense of responsibility, initiative and enterprise, as they have “sold” themselves to Lenovo. They are what we considered entrepreneurs. And only with a good mechanism in the enterprises can professional managers develop into entrepreneurs."
Professional manager Dr. Gao Qunyao,Chief Executive of Microsoft (China),used his personal experience to show that in real life the boundary between entrepreneurs and professional managers is vague. He said, employees at Microsoft are shareholders themselves, their sense of enterprise responsibility increases as their shares increase.
