钱江晚报7月31日报道 中国古代四大发明早已妇孺皆知远播海外,假如有人告诉你,指南针、造纸术、火药、活字印刷,竟不能完全代表中国古代科技的最高水平,你会怎么想?

经过一年多筹备的《奇迹天工——中国古代发明创造文物展》日前在中国科技馆新馆开展。

这次大展由国家文物局和中国科协联合主办,以丝绸、青铜、造纸印刷和瓷器四大文物为主展示了中国古代伟大发明创造,一经展出,就受到了极大的欢迎。

昨天,承担丝绸部分的主要策展人、中国丝绸博物馆副馆长赵丰回到了杭州。他向记者表示,原来的四大发明,已不能完全代表中国古代科技的最高水平。而这次展览,则是新“四大发明”的首次集体亮相。

据赵丰介绍,所谓新四大发明,是与舶来的四大发明而言的。约400年前,英国哲学家弗兰西斯·培根指出,印刷术、火药、指南针“这三种发明已经在世界范围内把事物的全部面貌和情况都改变了。”

来华传教士、汉学家艾约瑟最先在上述三大发明中加入造纸术,他在比较日本和中国时指出“必须永远记住,他们(指日本)没有如同印刷术、造纸、指南针、和火药那种卓越的发明”。

传统的四大发明一经提出,就有学者提出新观点,世界著名科技史家李约瑟博士曾经列举了中国传入西方的26项,认为中国重要的发明技术不止这四大发明。

赵丰介绍,丝绸是中国古代重要的创造发明之一,与其它创造发明相比,有着出现最早、应用最广、传播最远、技术最高四大特点。它出现在新石器时代,与中华文明同岁;它衣被天下,服务众生;它传播世界,丝绸之路成为东西方交流的通道;它的技术含量最高,发明创造点极多。在这一展览里,丝绸部分着重展示了六项在世界纺织史上独领风骚的发明专利。一是把野桑蚕驯化为家蚕;这是生物学史上极为重大的发明,人类历史上只有家蚕和蜜蜂两种昆虫被驯化。二是发明踏板织机,此后“机”字不仅成为所有jiji和机器的总称,而且成为机智、机敏、机灵等聪敏智慧的代词;三是一整套织物结构系统,正是由于这一套结构的设计,才出现了绫罗绸缎锦等各种丝织品种;四是控制图案循环的提花程序,这是丝织技术中最为神奇的部分,这种线编而成的花本传到欧洲之后发展成打孔的纸版,进而对电报和早期计算机器的发明产生影响;五是夹缬,这种在唐玄宗时期发明的多彩防染印花技术一直到流传到今天;六是锁绣,虽然只是一种手工技艺,但在世界刺绣艺术之林独树一帜。

赵丰还说,印刷造纸术与丝绸紧密相关。最早的印刷术是在汉代,是用在丝绸上的。而唐代才出现在纸上的雕版印刷。另外最早的纸是丝纤维形成的薄层,后来,加入其它植物纤维后,才成为有一定强度、可用于书写的纸。

目前,赵丰正在参加“指南针计划”,这是列入《国家“十一五”时期文化发展规划纲要》的重大科研项目,是继“中华文明探源”之后的重大文化项目。专家们将研究中国古代到底有多少创造发明,这次展览可以说是这一项目的预演。 (本文来源:浙江在线-钱江晚报 作者:记者金毅) 谭礼剑

    "Qianjiang Evening News" 31/07/2008 Chinese hoary Top 4 Invents have been well known domestic and abroad. If one tells you that Compass, Papermaking Skill, Powder and Typography can't represent completely toppest level in Chinese hoary science and technology at all. How do you think it on earth?

    Recently, the exhibition named "Miracle of Nature's Engineering-Cultural Relic Exhibition of Chinese Hoary Invents and Creations" is showed at new museum of CSTM after preparation more than 1 year.

    The large-scaled exhibition is hosted jointly by SACH and CAFST. It mainly exposes top 4 cultural relics, or Silk, Bronze, Papermaking and Printing and China, to show Chinese hoary great invents and creations. Once it appears, great popularity is followed.

    Yesterday (30/07/2008, Wed.), major hatcher born the part of Silk, or Vice-curator of China Silk Museum, Mr. Feng ZHAO came back to Hangzhou. He told reporter that former Top 4 Chinese Invents no longer fully represent the highest level in Chinese hoary science and tech. This exhibition, however, exposes grouply new "Top 4 Invents"in the first time.

    Per what Mr. ZHAO introduced, so-called new top 4 Chinese invents are opposited to the exotic ones. Arond 400 years ago, British philosopher, Francis Bacon pointed out that "the 3 invents of Printing, Powder and Compass have already changed stuffs' whole appearances and conditions within the scope of the world".

    Churchman to China and Sinologist, Joseph Edkins, added firstly Papermaking Skill to the above-mentioned top 3 invents. He pointed out while comparing Japan with China that "we must remember forever that they (referring to Japan) don't have such similar kind of superexcellent invents as Prining Skill, Papermaking, Compass and Powder". 

    Once the traditional Top 4 Invents were proposed, there were scholars bringing new viewpoints forward. Dr. Joseph Needham (1900-1995), world famous historian on science and technology, ever enumerated 26 Chinese skills introduced to the western. He thought Chinese important invention techniques were far more than the 4 top invents. 

    Feng ZHAO introduced, Silk was one of important creations and invents in Chinese ancientry. Compared with other creations and invents, it featured four characters which were the earliest appearance, the widest application, the farest spreading and the toppest technique. It appeared in the Neolithic Period, as centuries-old as Chinese civilization; It produced enough cloth and quilts and serviced for the world; It spreaded abroad and the Silk Road became the routeway of communication between the Eastern and the Western; It contained the toppest tech with profuse points of invent and creation. In the exhibition, Silk part stressed to unfurl 6 invention patents standing first in the history of world weaving. 1) Domestication of family-fed silkworm from wild one: This was an extremely significant invent in the history of biology. In human being's history, there were only two kinds of domesticated inspects, silkworm and bee. 2) Invention of treadle loom (Ta Ban Zhi Ji in Chinese): From then on, "Ji" in Chinese constituted not only the general name of Ji Xie (machine in English) and Ji Qi (machinery in English), but also the smart and wise words, like Ji Zhi (tactful in English), Ji Min (sharp-witted in English), Ji Ling (clever in English) and so on. 3) A full set of system of fabric structure: Just thanks to its design, all kinds of  silk species were formed, i.e. Ling (damask silk in English), Luo (bengaline in English), Chou (silk in English), Duan (satin in English), Jin (brocade in English) and so forth. 4) Jacquard (also figured) program controlled cycle of pattern: It was a most supernatural part in silk knitted technology. Paper mould with holes was developed after the ornament plaited by the kind of thread was intorduced into Europe. Furthermore, it influenced the inventions of telegraph and calculating machine in early stage. 5) Jia Xie (in Chinese): This kind of colourful resist printing tech was been circulating till now, which was invented in Xuanzong (a Chinese emperor in Tang Dynasty named Longji LI) period of Tang Dynasty. 6) Chain-stitch: Although it was only a kind of handcraft skill, it developed a school Chinese owned in the forest of embroidery art in the world.

    He added that Printing and Papermaking Skill were closely related with Silk. The earliest Printing Skill was formed in Han Dynasty and finished on the silk frabric. It was, however, printed on the paper till Tang Dynasty. In addition, the earliest paper was a kind of lamina constituted by silk flock. Subsequently, it was mixed with other vegetable fibres. Then, it finally became the paper to be written with some intensity.

    At present, Mr. ZHAO is taking part in "the Compass Project", which is a key program of scientific research listed into "Cultural Development Planning Outline during National 'Eleventh Five-Year Plan' Period" and of culture connected to "Exploring the Origin of Chinese Civilization". Through the project, experts will study how many creations and invents in Chinese ancientry on earth.
